Scotty (which is not his real name, but with some research you can find it on his blog) is 41 and lives with his partner in Bedford, Indiana; where an average home costs $103,600 and the crime rate is less than 1/3 it is for any other average small city in America.

The first thing you will notice about his blog cleverly called “The Other Side of Straight” is the uniquely deep green colored background (for those copycats out there – it is color #e8eced). The content on the blog is a nice mix of personal (such as a coming of age sex in the bathroom) stories and things to keep you coming back for more (such as half-nekkid Thursdays). The ongoing topic though that tugged a heartstring for me (as a gay father) is his struggles with his X wife (and her husband) around his children. Scotty has 2 daughters and a son from a previous straight marriage. Fortunately, he has 50% physical custody – but unfortunately there is an ongoing battle for full custody and recent talk of the mother wanting to move to LA. Sorry it took so long to get this blog review out this morning, but it has taken me several days and the reading of thousands of words to get a good sense of his blog “Too Much Information”. TMI is a well written (fairly new) blog that although lengthy (yes, you must commit at least 10 minutes to each entry) is very entertaining and thought provoking. Randy is able to draw from his own personal experiences (both recent and in his “misspent youthful” past) to bring us to think about our own similar struggles and joys. Recent topics include a visit to New Orleans (prior to the flooding), a teen’s first sexual encounters (for adult reading only), and a birthday/anniversary message to his husband (who apparently doesn’t read the blog).

Damion is a 33 year old Ph.D. candidate in the English department at the University of Maryland-College Park. He was born and raised in the state of Georgia. He writes and manages the gay blog named Queering the Apparatus. QTA is a well written blog. At first look you may think – oh this blog looks like shit (yes, the banner sucks and the little clock is annoying) – but I really encourage you to let the words and topics give it a chance. Damion uses the English language to paint a representation of various elements of his life. He also is very engaging with his blog following (who I believe are conspiring to take his adorable dogs) – particularly with the recent use of polls. Recent topics include Vintage Men, Horror Movies, and Depeche Mode.

It all started on Sunday November 2, 2003 with a blurb about how old he feels for watching the elder movie “Ghostbusters”. Cosmoblog has been a work of love by “Groove” ever since. He has tackled many topics including a recent entry about his audience and an insightful analysis of how bloggers use other bloggers as their muse. Groove is an excellent communicator, funny, and insightful. Groove also has some wonderful original essays that are creative, thought provoking, and emotional. We especially enjoyed “The Attic”. As such I have given the following evaluation:

Oh, and I can read at a 5th grade level.

Life.By.Jase brings us into the world of a 25 year old Internet consultant in New York City who refers to himself as a “potato queen” (you do the research, but here’s a hint – he is not a “rice queen”). Jase has celebrated his blog’s one year anniversary this week (congrats!). His first post was a simple 2 liner about Gemini’s,

“Some say they're two faced. - I say they're twice as fun.”

He gets more creative over the year with his geeky behaviors documented such as those exhibited with Augusten Burrough readings at a book store. Jase’s writing is quite smart and amusing – with the exception of his regular entries about food he has cooked and tried. Jase also has a sister blog with about 15 photos to enjoy of himself, sex objects and his sister’s tattoo.

It has not been very easy moving around the blog based on topic or date and the design is very basic – like a drizzle of chocolate in a snow pile. Overall, Jase has some great content (like his coming out story) that just needs a bit more excitement around the edges – perhaps a potato dressed like the Queen Mother?

I would like to continue the review of the best gay blogs (note the new “returning” logo with Best Gay Blogs) with “A Spider’s Web in Thornton Park”. This gay blog whose author is located in Orlando has a good eye for the backend of operations. He utilizes the asses of some hot guys (and several other PG-13 body parts) to bring inspiration and hope to its readership. For instance in recent days he used a cute butt to give some consoling to Yankee fans out there having a bad week. He also shares a fair bit of personal escapades, such as his recent attendance at gay pride in Orlando.

Overall, “Spider” has created a nice web of material to get stuck in for a while – at least until he eats you. :)

Happy Birthday to My Man!

Happy Birthday to my sweetie! My partner Michael turns the big…oops - maybe I’m not supposed to share age here…but let’s just say he is celebrating his birthday today. For his birthday we are going to see U2 at Madison Square Garden tonight.

Michael and I met on PlanetOut in May of 2000. We chatted online for a week or so then met for our first date on Monday, June 5, 2000. We decided to meet across the street from where he worked, the Bryant Park Grill. It was love at first sight - honestly. I was mesmerized by his cute face and red hair. We had a wonderful dinner, both of us struggling to keep up the conversation as we were both so nervous. After dinner, Michael had to go back to his office to get his backpack and so we walked up. When he got his stuff together, he turned around in the office and looked at me and said “Would you mind if I kissed you right now?” My heart was racing and I blurted an emphatic “Not at all”. It was a smooth, soft, and delicious kiss. From that point forward I was addicted to Michael’s taste and touch. The date ended with us in Central Park sitting on a bench at the south end of the Great Lawn and passionately making out for hours. We created such a stir that two police officers on bikes kept circling around us, clearly wondering what we were up to (or maybe afraid of what else we were looking to be up to). The date ended with us both going to our respective apartments and looking forward to our next date. I slept very little that night and feel luckier each day for having had the opportunity.

Homeless Woman

This morning I went to the grocery store and stopped off to put some high cost engine fuel (ok – just f_cking overly expensive gas) in my car. While pumping (the gas that is) a woman approached me from a car on the other side of the island. The car was very small and filled to the edges with what appeared to be her “Do you have a dollar for some gas?” I won’t say what my response was so not to sway your opinion (yet), but I wonder how many of you out there would have told her “no” or “here’s 100 pennies I was saving” or would have handed her a $20 bill. Of course my first thought was how much gas is a dollar going to get her – enough to fill the fuel injector perhaps?

Today I am on the tail end of a business trip to Chicago and will be heading home to New York. I have been here for leadership track training. The main concept of the training is that we can apply principles in psychology (i.e. 6 Basic Human Needs) to our diplomatic communications skills. One of the topics that came up late in the day yesterday was the behavioral differences between men and women. Now – I will preface this by saying that all 40+ participants beside my self are from the Midwest (and many of them seem to be come from a conservative background). The last half hour of the day was promoting the generalizations about how men and women behave differently. As a gay man, I found that most of the descriptors for the women described me better. I also thought the way it was presented was both sexist and overly generalized. And yet the instructor continued to call on all the men to support his theories (i.e. we grunt when we walk past one another in the hallway, while women want an emotional connection and so will have short dialogues to catch up). At one point we were talking about how a handshake can tell a lot about a person’s psychology and the instructor made mention that a light handshake from a man could mean “You know,” the instructor said with a wink wink - while all his squirrel trainees laughed. We had started the class with a question about what key questions are we constantly asking ourselves internally – and for many in the room they answered “what are other thinking about me.” Finally, someone asked the instructor what his questions was – and he said that he had grown beyond the “what do others think of me” question to “how can I use the gifts God gave me to be a better person.” BARF – I think he needs to start thinking again about what others think of him…

It’s a pretty simple concept – you drive your car at less than 11 miles per hour into a box. You then wait for a light to turn green and you move forward in traffic. Sometime later in the month you receive an email notification that your bank account was charged for the privilege of driving on that stretch of road. Obviously I am very simply describing E-ZPass. About 2 months ago I received a violation notice in the mail that I had gone through an E-ZPass lane without a device. I should state here that my E-ZPass device is plastered to my car’s windshield and has rarely ever moved. On this particular day I had used it three other times in addition to the “pass” through this toll plaza, and so it was a suspect charge from the start. I looked up my account online which notates every transaction with the date and time of the “pass”. I noted that I had been charged for the “pass” just seconds after the violation claims I went through the plaza without it. I called E-ZPass and they told me to send a copy of the statement (because they claimed they had no exposure to any accounts) to them to clear it up. I did that and was told that this would clear my incident. Yesterday I got home from work and received another violation on a different day – but this time stating that this was a second violation (and so I can assume the first one was never handled properly). It was the same toll plaza and same lane. I looked online again and sure enough I was charged for the toll 2 seconds earlier than the violation on my statement. I will call them once again and try faxing my evidence this time and see if I get a different result...one that is E-Z'er.

Naturally most of the readers of blogs are also bloggers themselves. It is estimated that in the US alone (although most statistics are still not scientific, as it is difficult to track them all), there are some 3.3 million blogs being updated daily. On that note, this week I would like to start reviewing some of my favorite blogs. Mind you that these are blogs that I read every day, and so they are top notch to begin with. My evaluation is my individual bitchy judgment. If you are hurt by my opinion of your blog…I’m sorry in advance and hope that we can still be blogmates. :) I would like to begin today at the top of my blogrolling list with “A Guy Site”. This adult blog (must be 18 or older to view) whose author is located in Dallas Texas never disappoints. He brings in plenty of hot imagery available from various movies, advertisements, television, and gay porn. Every now and again he will discuss something of topic, such as Hurricane Rita, but your visit to A Guy Site is nothing more than a great find for the hottest gay and straight boys in the blog world and plenty of links to see more (at a cost of course).

As a professional in marketing I sometimes wonder what the hell some of these Product Managers are thinking? What kind of market research was done to come up with the airflow mouse now available with a built-in fan that gently pushes air through systematically designed pores on the outer shell to cool your hand? Are there lots of people out there clicking so fast that they are sweating up a storm from their hands? Is there an arm deodorizer that goes along with that thing? Or is this simply a ploy to reach the geekdom of cool techno toys to say “I have it...and it blows!”

Weekend Update

Just a quick update – the 747 is nearly built – paint is taking a bit longer to dry than I originally anticipated and we are in the touch up phase. The bottle of wine was lovely and the trip to Target was a success. I have been looking to get a cushy tub mat and found the one I was looking for (and we got some lovely new bath towels). I have started reading the good book and it has wrapped me in already. I certainly can relate to his upbringing (even though it was on the other side of the world) as a youngster who knows he is “different” and is looking to connect with someone – but that’s a longer entry when I have some time. I also enjoyed the massages we received yesterday afternoon. The therapist was very strong and she was able to release tensions and toxins in various areas of my body that have never been tapped so intensely. Hmmm…that leaves one last task to complete the weekend. Here is one more picture from my collection to enjoy! Have a wonderful Sunday.

Consider it – you have decided to spend your life reporting the truth to the public for a common good. You have been successful and found your career brought you to be a reporter for the perfect bubble butt of all journalistic jobs – reporting for the NY Times. You have a conversation with a source, but decide that you have no intention to write a report about the conversation or information you have gathered. Now imagine that you are told by a court that you must either share that discussion in a grand jury or be thrown in jail until you do.

Judith Miller has been freed (after three months in jail) and will testify today to conclude an investigation of the leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's name to the press. She was resolute in her defense that she was acting as a reporter and should be able to keep her source confidential. It seems like a pretty clear cut right that should be honored for the ultimate resolve to get truth from sources which ultimately communicates truth to the general public. But apparently legally it is not that simple. Yesterday, Judith got a personal waiver from her source to release the information which is why she has decided to testify. We will not be hearing from her about her 3 months in jail or her feelings on the subject until after that testimony. What will she say?

Bankruptcy is one of those words that will create quite an emotional reaction – depending on what you are specifically talking about. If a potential boyfriend chooses to tell you he filed for bankruptcy, you might think “this guy has made some poor decisions in his life.” If a favorite clothing store goes bankrupt, you might run to get the latest styles for the cheapest price. If you are looking to buy a car, you are likely to not even consider going to with a brand that has recently announced bankruptcy. Why am I babbling about bankruptcy this morning? If you are planning to fly in a major airline in the US this week, did you realize that you have a better than 50% chance that your seat will be managed by a bankrupt company (ok – saying it nicely “in Chapter 11 protection”)? In less than two years the airline industries total fuel bill has more than doubled from $44bn in 2003 to what is estimated to be $97bn for 2005. This has resulted in some of the biggest airline players (most recently Delta and Northwest) to go running to the courthouse (and not for the rumored wedding). It is concerning that employees going to work today for these carriers are worried about their employment (not that it’s a new thing in the industry) rather than being focused on fixing the spring connected to the other thing connected to the rudder. I hope that we can finally wake up and get the teams together (corporate airlines with the assistance of our government) and figure out how we are going to address this issue over the long term. Cool Air

I’m feeling a bit groggy this morning after taking some sleepy cold medicine last night before going to bed. I started with a bit of a cold yesterday – or maybe just a bad case of the allergies – they seem to get worse as I get older. We encountered a fair bit of rain last night - it has been a while for us in the Northeast. This morning we awoke to a cool chill in the air – a sign of the fall approaching and the leaves to begin turning. I always say that I would love to live in California or Arizona because of the nice weather…although it’s on mornings like this that I feel very grateful that I live in a part of the country where the weather changes with the seasons. At least that’s how I will feel for the first few weeks until our doorsteps are covered with 3 feet of snow and it will take 30 minutes to prepare the car for transportation in the mornings. I guess the biggest struggle for me during the change of the seasons is the lack of the sun which has a direct effect on my mood. I can definitely get into the doldrums with the weather changes and although I’ve learned how to manage it very well, it is not a fun prospect to have to do so. For today I will simply enjoy the cool air and be grateful.

Drunk Night

I seem to have misplaced a ring somewhere and I have an x marked on my hand. My sweetie, I, and friend Jim decided to go out to a local gay bar providing a “carnival” theme last night. The problem is that we arrived too early and were too interested in the clowns that joined us that we didn’t leave until it was too late. Needless to say I am rattling this blog entry as my fingers shake in their own control and I am still in a haze. It is rare when I either don’t know when to stop drinking or let myself get to the point where I have been for so long that I can’t walk straight – but there it is. I have to go and help a friend move today – some furniture lifting and the like, to assist me with the aspirin in getting out of this fog. I hope to have a less intoxicating entry for you tomorrow.

Clutter

Clutter makes me crazy! You know the old saying “cleanliness is next to godliness” – I’m not sure that the expression has any meaning to me other than to say that clutter is a pain in my ass. I think that clutter is a sign of having an unfair share of stuff that doesn’t hold as much value any longer. Think about the things that are cluttering your shelves and drawers – books, music, bills, and papers. Sure, some of them have sentimental value and may be used at some point in the future (i.e. in the event of a lawsuit from an ex), but do we really need to hold on to so much of the stuff we have? Shouldn’t we purge every now and then and give some of those less important things to someone who will appreciate them? I have a tendency to fluctuate between hobbies and interests. I admit - it is a problem – I cannot commit to those types of interests, and yet I can commit to a relationship and job. I suppose I feel that we have one shot in life to try various things and we should find out what we like and don’t by trying them out. This, however, results in the problem of clutter. I have a bike that I “had to have” that sits in a small closet unused, I have books on the shelves that I have read and never intend to read again, and I have shirts hanging in my closet that should never be worn by anyone with a sense of style again (is it wrong to donate those to the poor?). I intend to spend a portion of my day removing some of the clutter that makes me crazy and think about who I can pass it along to that will better use and enjoy it. Anyone need an extra Bible?

Have you ever had one of those days where everyone is in attack mode and you go to sleep thinking - this is really a dog eat dog world? I had one of those days yesterday. It started with lots of folks at work giving unnecessary attitude towards me. There wasn't anything in particular going on to cause it, but it was coming from lots of unrelated directions. It then continued when I did a client visit. My job allows me to sit one on one with clients once a month to get product feedback to be able to take back to the rest of my team to plan for improvements in the product to meet market need. Although I knew this client had indicated that they had a good amount of feedback, I was unprepared for the total mass of it. I'll simply leave it by saying that they had some very valid reasons for being upset, but I felt like the whipping boy for my company for the day. Maybe the moon and planets were aligned in a certain formation yesterday, but I just want to be like our dog Emma (above), a lying relaxed dog just for a day. Maybe this weekend I will get a chance for it.

Nerves of glass

I was crunched up like a baby on the couch – heart racing – deep breath – tight fists – and nerves of glass – as I watched JetBlue 292 BUR-JFK makes its emergency landing at LAX on live broadcast last night. It is not often that the broadcast of such an air incident is televised live – usually we get the amateur video clips shortly after the incident, but this was a case where the nation was watching in anticipation. I suspect that it happening in California was no surprise where many live events (car chases for instance) are tracked by helicopter eyes in the sky. I have always wondered if there is a good that comes from reporting such events live. Sure – the networks will delay the images in rare cases where someone’s safety is in jeopardy (usually law enforcement), but even beyond that – what good does live recording these events bring except increased advertising dollars? Isn’t this just the American need for an adrenaline rush every now and again – or is there truly a public service being accomplished in those live moments?

Gas Station Attendants

What is it with some states requiring that a gas station attendant must be the one to pump the gas into your vehicle? It makes me crazy on several levels - I know - it's a control thing - I want to be able to control how fuel gets put into my gas tank. But there are annoying things about the other guy doing it. For instance, this morning I had the experience and was greeted by a cranky Russian man who was annoyed that I interrupted his coffee, danish, and cigarette. Then, it appeared he hadn't had enough time doing the job to get the swiping skill required to run your credit card through the payment machine - and so he kept running it through over and over - rubbing the magnetic strip down to a mint strip. He then proceeded to put the gas pump into the car and forced it in so far (this is starting to sound like mechanic porn) that it keeps autostopping (you know that lovely feature to prevent spillage). He finally put it in upside down after banging up the hole quite a bit. He then went back indoors to work on his danish again and nearly forgot I was there. I fianlly had to honk 5 minutes after the pump was finished to get him to complete his duties. I understand that these are underpaid prediminantly depressed individuals, but why does a state decide that it is safer to have an underpaid angry Russian smoker pump your gas than the owner of the vehicle?

Gaining Weight

I was disciplined…I was good…ate lots of salad and fruits and vegetables…but dam nit if I didn’t gain a bloody 5 pounds despite my efforts. I am following my point allotment and this week was less than a wash. I spent more time last week working out and everyone on the ww board is saying it is because muscle mass is overcoming the lard in my ass – but whatever…I’m a bit depressed today because of my gain. It’s discouraging to see the graph go back up again. For those who don’t know me – I am on my journey to losing weight (among other things) – approximately 30 pounds to be exact. I started at 150 and am on my way to 120 (and looking to stick there). I haven’t been 120 pounds since High School, and am very eager to get back to that slim and freeing weight once again. I can't wait for the pounds to deliquesce off my small frame like they do for this cutie we met in Cancun this summer.
